🔮 How to Write Effective Prompts and Negative Prompts for AI Art
Tips and tricks from an experienced user for creating stunning people, animals, and backgrounds
I’ve been working with AI image generation tools for a few years now, and one thing I’ve learned is this: your prompt is everything. A well-written prompt can produce breathtaking, polished results, while a vague or overloaded one usually leads to blurry, awkward, or “plastic-looking” images.
Just as important are negative prompts. These act like filters, telling the AI what not to do — removing unwanted distortions, odd body parts, or low-quality outputs.
In this post, I’ll share my favorite strategies, tricks, and a ready-to-use cheat sheet of prompts and negative prompts for different categories: people, animals, and natural backgrounds.
👩 People (Characters & Pin-Up Girls)
Main Prompt Tips
Be specific about the pose (kneeling with arched back like a cat, standing confidently with one hand on hip).
Define the style (semi-realistic pin-up, fantasy realism, Luis Royo inspired).
Add emotion and attitude (seductive, playful, mysterious, confident).
Negative Prompts
ugly, deformed, bad anatomy, extra limbs, blurry, low quality, watermark, text
For women: masculine face, old, fat, bad hands, missing fingers, broken proportions
✅ Examples:
1. Pirate Pin-Up
Prompt:
A full-body semi-realistic pin-up style pirate girl. Kneeling with arched back like a cat, wearing a loose white pirate shirt tied at the chest, short leather skirt, thigh-high boots. A red Santa hat with fluffy fur. Playful seductive expression. Cinematic lighting, beige background.
Negative:
ugly, bad anatomy, extra limbs, blurry, watermark, masculine, bad hands
2. Gothic Mermaid
Prompt:
A semi-realistic gothic mermaid with an autumn-colored tail, sitting on a rock. A bra and crown made of autumn leaves. Long dark flowing hair, arms crossed on her chest, sad expression. Luis Royo inspired. Beige background.
Negative:
cartoon, anime, blurry, extra arms, bad anatomy, deformed tail
3. Vintage Witch
Prompt:
A pin-up style witch in black lace lingerie with stockings, wearing a tall witch hat. Sitting on a stone with a black cat on her lap and a carved pumpkin at her feet. Long red hair, playful seductive smile. Semi-realistic, cinematic lighting. Beige background.
Negative:
ugly, fat, bad hands, missing fingers, blurry, cartoon, extra limbs
🐅 Animals
Main Prompt Tips
Define species + pose (majestic white tiger lying on a rock).
Set the atmosphere (mystical forest, cinematic lighting).
For realism: emphasize textures (detailed fur, sharp animal eyes).
Negative Prompts
extra legs, mutated, blurry, cartoon, humanoid features
✅ Examples:
1. Tiger in the Mist
Prompt:
A majestic white tiger lying on a mossy rock in a foggy forest. Hyper-realistic fur detail, glowing eyes, cinematic lighting.
Negative:
cartoon, mutated, blurry, extra legs, low detail
2. Pirate Monkey
Prompt:
A cheeky little monkey dressed as a pirate, wearing a tiny Santa hat. Sitting on a barrel on a ship deck. Semi-realistic, detailed fur, playful expression.
Negative:
cartoon, humanoid monkey, blurry, extra arms
3. Gothic Raven
Prompt:
A gothic black raven perched on a skull, autumn leaves scattered around, dramatic moonlight. Realistic feathers, mystical atmosphere.
Negative:
cartoon, blurry, mutated, glowing eyes (if strict realism is desired)
🌲 Natural Backgrounds
Main Prompt Tips
Define location (forest, desert, pirate ship deck, snowy mountains).
Set the mood (mystical, cinematic, cozy, dramatic).
Add details (garlands, barrels, lanterns, falling leaves).
Negative Prompts
blurry, flat colors, cartoon, simple, text, watermark, duplicate objects
✅ Examples:
1. Autumn Forest
Prompt:
A mystical autumn forest, golden and red leaves falling, soft mist between the trees. Cinematic lighting, highly detailed, semi-realistic.
Negative:
cartoon, simple, blurry, flat colors, text
2. Christmas Pirate Ship Deck
Prompt:
A detailed pirate ship deck decorated for Christmas. Wooden barrels wrapped with red cloth trimmed in white fur, glowing garlands along the ropes, red banners on the masts, sails with festive touches, warm lantern light. Semi-realistic cinematic style.
Negative:
cartoon, blurry, empty, low detail, text, watermark
3. Snowy Mountain Lake
Prompt:
A cinematic mountain landscape with snowy peaks, pine trees, a reflective frozen lake, and mist rolling through the valley. Realistic, moody lighting.
Negative:
cartoon, blurry, flat colors, duplicate sun
💡 Extra Tricks & Hidden Gems
Posing is magic — kneeling, squatting, arched back, standing with crossed arms always makes results more controlled.
Lighting is everything — add cinematic lighting, soft shadows, warm glow, volumetric fog for depth and realism.
Detail balance — describe only key clothing features (lace, corset, fur trim) instead of overloading the AI with textures.
Quality boosters — phrases like highly detailed, hyper-realistic, ultra sharp, masterpiece, 8k often upgrade the final image.
Artist styles — adding Luis Royo, Frank Frazetta, Artgerm, Greg Rutkowski infuses personality and atmosphere.
Filter out garbage — always put in negatives like blurry, low quality, text, watermark, extra limbs, mutated.
Background control — if you need a simple scene: plain beige background, no objects.
Composition control — experiment with centered composition, full body, close-up, low angle, dynamic pose to refine framing.
🎨 Conclusion
The secret to great AI art is a balance of clarity and creativity. Too vague — and the AI invents nonsense. Too overloaded — and it breaks down. The sweet spot is a structured prompt that clearly defines pose, outfit, mood, and setting, while the negative prompt sweeps away the unwanted mess.
Over time, you’ll build your own “prompt library” — favorite phrases, negative sets, and artist styles that always work for you. Think of AI as your co-creator: the clearer your vision, the better the masterpiece.
